Internships for High Schoolers: Start Without Experience

How to Land Internships or Part-Time Jobs as a High School Student, Even if You Have “No Experience”

Let’s be honest. When you’re in high school, trying to get an internship or part-time job can feel daunting. Every listing says, “Experience required,” and you’re left wondering, “How can I get experience?”

But don’t worry. You don’t need a fancy resume, an impressive LinkedIn profile, or a large social media following to land your first gig. You just need to know how to start small, think smart, and show your passion.

Let’s break it down.

1. Shift Your Mindset: You Do Have Experience

You may not have worked at a company yet, but you’ve done more than you think:

– Volunteered at a school event? That shows organization and teamwork.

– Edited your friend’s YouTube videos? That’s content creation.

– Helped your siblings with homework? That’s leadership and patience.

Start thinking like this: Your life = your resume. Now it’s time to build your story around it.

2. Create a Simple but Powerful Resume

Don’t overthink it. Your first resume can be one page and still be impressive. Here’s what to include:

– Contact Info (email, phone)

– Education (your school, grade)

– Skills (communication, Canva, CapCut, social media, etc.)

– Experience/Activities (volunteering, school projects, clubs)

– A Short Personal Statement like: “Passionate high school student with a creative eye for video editing and a strong interest in media and marketing.”

Need help? Use free tools like Canva Resume Templates or Zety.

3. Where to Look for Internships or Jobs

Here’s where many students go wrong—they only apply to well-known companies. Instead, try these places:

– Local Businesses: Cafes, bookstores, salons, tutoring centers. Walk in, smile, and say: “Hi, I’m a high school student looking to gain some work experience. Do you happen to need any extra help after school or on weekends?”

– Startups or Creators: Many creators (YouTubers, small business owners) need help with editing, managing comments, designing posts, etc. Message or email them professionally: “Hi! I admire your content and was wondering if you’re open to having a student intern who’s eager to learn and help you grow your brand.”

– Your School Network: Ask your teachers, school counselor, or alumni. Join clubs like business, media, or career clubs—they often have insider leads.

4. Write a Killer Email (Or DM)

Here’s a quick script you can adjust:

Subject: High School Student Eager to Help & Learn

Hi [Name],

My name is [Your Name], and I’m a [Grade] student at [School Name]. I’m really interested in [field/industry], and I’m looking for a part-time opportunity or internship where I can learn, contribute, and grow.

I’ve developed skills in [list 2–3 relevant skills], and I’m eager to put them to use. I’d love to help out in any way that’s useful to you or your business.

Would you be open to a quick conversation about any opportunities?

Thanks so much for your time!

Warmly,

[Your Name]

[Your Contact Info]

5. Be Willing to Start Small (But Think Big)

The first opportunity may be unpaid. That’s okay—as long as you’re learning. Sometimes, a small role (like posting Instagram stories for a local business) leads to a full job later on. The goal isn’t just money. It’s building experience, confidence, and a real-life resume.

Bonus: Stand Out with a Mini Portfolio

Even if you’re just starting, you can create a mini “portfolio” using:

– Screenshots of your Canva designs

– A Google Drive with edited videos

– A Notion page with your goals, skills, and links

This makes you instantly memorable.

Final Thoughts

Finding your first job or internship isn’t about having the most experience—it’s about showing the most initiative. When you take the first step, people notice.

So go ahead. Send that email. Walk into that store. Reach out to that creator.

Because the truth is: Every professional was once a high schooler with no experience too. And guess what? You’re already ahead of the game.
