A Canadian visa is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that allows a person to enter, exit and transit through Canada. A visa is required for most foreign nationals who wish to visit Canada, with some exceptions.

Let’s look at what a Canadian visa is, who needs it, and its types.

Who needs a Canadian visa?

Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter Canada, with some exceptions. You may not require a visa if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • A permanent resident of Canada
  • A member of the Nunavut Inuit or an Indigenous person
  • If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you will need a visa if you wish to visit, work, study or transit through the country.

What types of Canadian visas are there?

The type of visa you will need depends on the purpose of your visit to Canada. The most common types of Canadian visas are:

Visitor visas

A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) allows you to visit Canada for tourism or business purposes. If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you do not need a visa to visit Canada. However, you will need a visa if you are travelling from a country that is not visa-exempt.

Work visas

A work visa allows you to work in Canada temporarily. You will need a work permit to work in Canada unless you are exempt.

Student visas

A student visa allows you to study at a designated learning institution in Canada temporarily. You will need a study permit to study in Canada unless you are exempt.

Permanent residence visas

A permanent residence visa allows you to live in Canada permanently. You will need to meet certain eligibility requirements and pass a medical exam to be granted permanent residence.

Transit visas

A transit visa allows you to stop in Canada while in transit to another country. You may need a transit visa if you travel through Canada by air, land, or sea.

How to apply for a Canadian visa?

If you want to visit Canada, you need to apply for a visa. Visas are issued by the Government of Canada and allow visitors to enter the country for a specific purpose.

There are different types of visas, and the one you need will depend on your reason for travelling to Canada.

To apply for a visa, you will need to fill out an application and submit it to the Canadian Embassy or consulate in your country. You will also need to provide supporting documents, such as a passport, proof of financial support, and an itinerary.

The new, more secure visa application replaces the old, paper-based system. Visas are to be submitted through an electronic online form as advised by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and the application can be found on the IRCC website.

The five-minute online application process for a Canadian Visa is attractive to many applicants. Still, the Canadian Government tries to dissuade people from trekking to the Embassy by insisting that it’s “faster and cheaper” to apply online.

To pay the fees using a credit card or debit card, you’ll need an internet-connected browser, an email address, and a PayPal or Credit/Debit Card.

Once you submit your Canada Visa Application on this website, it is checked by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to ensure that it is complete. If it is, a personalized checklist is generated with instructions on what you need to do next.

Most Canadian visa applications are decided within 15 days to 45 days. In peak time it can take longer. You will be notified of your approval or denial via email.

Important Guidelines before applying for a Canadian visa?

It is always best to be as prepared as possible when applying for a Canadian Study Permit.

Here are some necessary guidelines to help you through the process:

  1. The university or college should be DLI accredited

  1. Gather all the necessary documents. You will need your passport, proof of financial support providing adequate funds for minimum two years of tuition cost and living cost

  1. Submit your application early. The processing time for visa applications can vary, so it’s important to apply as soon as possible.

  1. Check the expiration date on your passport. Your visa will be only until the duration of your passport

  1. Declare all the details accurately in the application form. DONT hide anything

  1. The Study Plan should highlight your reason for choosing Canada and should be convincing for the visa officer that you will come back after completing your education

Following these guidelines will help ensure that your application goes smoothly and you can obtain your study permit on time.
