The college experience is one of the  greatest changes in one’s lives. It’s a period when academic, career, and personal advancement come together to form the future of one’s dreams. But with many paths present, how do you know which path is right for you? Whether you are applying to colleges, choosing a major, or just trying to figure out the way to go from here, the right self-reflective questions can add elements of insight and clarity that will take you toward the road that feels fulfilling and true to your hopes.

In this post, we will look at ten important questions every applicant must ask themselves. Reflecting on these questions will give you rich insights into yourself and help you build a picture of your future that is broader than just taking a degree or career.

What Am I Passionate About?

Passion always fuels long-term success. It’s what keeps you fired up through the worst times. During this process of choosing a college, you should ask yourself what you really care about.

These are your passions—be it science, art, technology, humanitarianism, or environmentalism. They need not be a very clearly defined career, but knowing what excites you will allow you to pick a major and career within those interests.

Takeaway: Reflect on your hobbies and interests. Do you enjoy problem-solving? Are you interested in how the human brain works? Do you feel fulfilled when helping others? Identifying your passion as early as possible will allow you to pursue endeavors you enjoy wholeheartedly.

What Skills Do I Want To Develop?

College is life-changing, and skills that help one survive the real world will be acquired during this time. These skills can be anything from leadership to critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, or technical expertise.

Knowing which skills to develop will enable you to select an appropriate major and pursue extracurricular activities that will complement your personal and professional aspirations. For example, if you wish to acquire leadership skills, then perhaps you may join a student organization or assume a leadership role in a group project.

Takeaway: Identify the skills you admire in others and would like to cultivate yourself. Do you want to develop great communication skills? Maybe you want to develop some skills in coding or data analysis? Write your goals down and look for opportunities in college that will help you develop in those areas.

What Kind of Impact Do I Want to Have in the World?

College is a time for self-exploration; it is also the time to think about the type of impact you wish to have in society. What issues around the world touch your heart? Climate change, social justice, health care?

In thinking of that impact, you’d get to know what fields might allow you to engage with those problems. For instance, if you’re passionate about environmental sustainability, then that would fit in with either an environmental science program or maybe a political science program, which would allow you to weigh in on contributing to policy-making or business solutions.

Takeaway: Reflect on the social or global problems you care most about. Whether you want to make an impact from your community to the world, knowing your wish for change will help steer you toward a major and career that resonates with yourself

What Are My Core Values?

Core values are the basic values and beliefs that inform your choices, decisions, behaviors, and actions. They carve out your identity, impacting your success and happiness in life. Some of the most common examples of core values include integrity, compassion, loyalty, creativity, and curiosity, amongst others.

While applying for colleges, evaluating whether the institutions adhere to your values is extremely important. For example, if community service and social responsibility are essential to you, you might choose to look at colleges with heavy volunteer programs or a commitment to social justice. If you value academia and  intellectual curiosity, you might look at colleges with strong environments for research.

Takeaway: Write down your core values, reflect on them, and see if they are congruent with college culture. You want to be in an environment where you feel that your values are nurtured and honored.

Where Do I See Myself in Five or Ten Years?

One can never predict the future, but it should be possible to have an idea of where you want to be within five or ten years. Is it the case that you see yourself working in a nonprofit, being a successful entrepreneur, or working in academia?

A long-term vision would help you know which college majors and career paths are likely to take you toward where you want to go. Having said that, it is not like you have to have all the answers right now; it just helps if you know a few things in general.

Takeaway: Think where you hope to be in the future and, working backward, shape your major, internships, networking, and extracurriculars that will help you get there.

What Are My Strengths and Weaknesses?

Bringing about your future largely depends on how self-aware you are. Once you are aware of your strengths, they can be worked upon while achieving excellence in anything in which you feel absolutely comfortable. However, on the other hand, your awareness about weaknesses inspires you to work on its improvement.

Your strengths could be brilliant communication skills, analytical thinking, or creative problem-solving. Your weaknesses could be pretty much anything—say, time management to public speaking. These two would help to narrow down your decisions about your major and career.

Takeaway: Undertake a strengths assessment test or spend some time thinking back to past events where you either especially excelled or especially struggled. This will provide illumination into understanding how to boost strengths and work on weaknesses.

In What Working Conditions Do I Flourish?

The spaces in which you work best and happiest can be imagined. Are you at your best in a collaborative, team-oriented space or prefer solitary activities in a quieter environment? Do you crave an environment that is fast-paced and filled with energy, or do you need a more organized, predictable routine? Knowing the kind of work environment in which you excel means that you can identify career fields and job kinds appropriate to your personality and working style.

Takeaway: Look at your experiences from the school settings and those you engage in outside school. Where did you feel most at home? Did you succeed in group projects, or did you do so when working on your own? Use this to choose your career going forward.

What Lifestyle Do I Imagine?

The lifestyle that you imagine is very important in determining the kind of career you will have. Are you a person that wants to go around the globe for your work, or do you want something that is more homey and steady? Do you think about a job bringing in lots of money but is loaded with hours spent on the job, or do you think more about work-home balance, flexibility, or other important aspects?

This lifestyle helps to narrow your choices to those careers best suited to what you now want. If you are dreaming of high salary corporate life traveling across the globe, a career in consulting or finance would suit you well. For people valuing work-life balance and wanting to spend time with those interested in the benefits of helping others, they would consider a career in healthcare or education as per their desires.

Takeaway: Think about what lifestyle you would like professionally and outside work. This vision will lead you to a career that will be fulfilling and monetarily supportive.

What Kind of Problems Would I Like to Solve?

Every career has its set of challenges, some that require the solving of very complex scientific problems while others may just involve helping individuals to better their mental health. As you think of your future, today ask yourself, what are the challenges that intrigue you? What problems would you like to dedicate your life to solving?

Whether it is in healthcare, poverty, inequality, or technology, discovering what challenges excite your passion will enable you to find a pathway that is personally meaningful as well as impactful.

Takeaway: Find out what problems or challenges fascinate you, and seek out ways to address them through your educational endeavors and future career. Those problems can shape what defines your purpose.

What Kind of Legacy Would I Want to Leave Behind?

Your legacy is the footprint you leave on this planet. It’s how you’re remembered by the people around you and the contributions you make to society. Whether it is innovative solutions in your field of study, helping underrepresented communities, or inspiring others to realize their dreams, thinking about your legacy provides navigational aids in your decision-making process.

Think about the kind of footprint you wish to leave behind in terms of legacy. This vision will serve to help you make thoughtful decisions in your college years as they relate to your grand designs.

Takeaway: Think about what kind of legacy you would want to create with your education, career, and personal actions. This may aid in guiding you toward selecting the right career path, goals, and purpose in life.

Conclusion

As you prepare for college and your future, ask yourself the most important questions. Because these questions, really, are going to be the ones to guide you along the path that always contains excitement, sometimes overwhelming, but always very rewarding. Know what you’re passionate about, the skills you want to hone, the impact you want to create, and the lifestyle you picture so that you can turn a well-dreamed vision into a roadmap for your future.
