The city of Padua played a crucial role during the 16th-century scientific revolution, establishing Italy as the birthplace of modern medicine. It was in Padua that Andreas Vesalius, an innovative anatomist, conducted human dissections for the first time, providing a true depiction of human anatomy. Before this, medical knowledge was primarily based on dissections of animals, such as monkeys. The University of Padua, established in 1222, was instrumental in advancing medical studies and became a leading center of scientific research.

Today, Italy’s healthcare system stands as a model of universal coverage. The Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) guarantees that even the most modest trattoria owner has access to excellent medical care. This system also creates an exceptionally supportive environment for medical students and professionals, fostering their education and development.

What is IMAT?

The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT)

The International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is a specialized admissions exam in English, created by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing for applicants seeking entry into Medicine and Surgery programs at Italian international medical schools.

IMAT is tailored specifically for English-taught medical courses at Italian universities, and it is open to both domestic and international students. The test was developed in 2011 under the guidance of the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MIUR), making it a unique entry requirement for these programs.

Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing (http://www.admissionstestingservice.org), renowned for its expertise in university admissions testing, designed IMAT. With over a decade of experience, Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing works with leading universities globally to create and manage assessments that inform admissions decisions. Their tests are evidence-based and supported by ongoing research to ensure they provide valuable and relevant information. The organization prioritizes fairness, ethical standards, and technical excellence in all its assessments.

Part of Cambridge Assessment, a non-profit division of the University of Cambridge, Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing designs and administers exams to over 8 million learners across more than 170 countries.

Purpose of the IMAT Guide

This guide is intended to help candidates prepare effectively for the IMAT, the entrance exam for undergraduate Medicine and Surgery programs at Italian international medical schools. It includes a range of examples and detailed explanations of each question type, allowing candidates to become well-acquainted with the question styles and test format.

By utilizing this guide, candidates will gain confidence in their preparation and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to achieve optimal results. Approved by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MIUR), this guide outlines the official specifications for both the format and content of the IMAT.

General information and test specification

The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) typically consists of 60 multiplechoice questions, each with five answer options, where only one option is correct. The exam covers topics such as general knowledge, logical reasoning, and several scientific disciplines. To succeed in the IMAT, candidates should:

1. Possess strong general knowledge in areas like literature, philosophy, history, social studies, politics, and institutions.

2. Develop logical reasoning skills for a variety of question types. Familiarity with the materials provided in the official guide and practice tests available on Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing’s website (www.admissionstestingservice.org) is essential.

3. Have a solid understanding of scientific subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, as outlined in the secondary school curriculum in the Ministerial Program.

The IMAT is designed to assess skills and knowledge that candidates are expected to have, so extensive additional study is not necessary.

Format of IMAT Test

The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is designed to assess candidates based on knowledge and skills they are expected to already possess, meaning extensive additional study is generally not required. Candidates can become familiar with the test format by downloading the test specifications and past papers from the Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing website: http://www.admissionstestingservice.org/for-test-takers/imat/preparing-for-imat/

The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, each with five answer options. Although all options may initially appear plausible, students will need to rely on their subject knowledge as well as their logical reasoning skills to select the correct answer.

The questions are divided into the following sections:

Section 1: 20 questions on Logical Reasoning and 2 questions on General Knowledge

Section 2: 18 Questions on Biology

Section 3: 12 Questions on Chemistry

Section 4: 8 questions on Physics and Mathematics

Note that the order of the questions in the actual exam may differ from the order in this guide. The questions will be randomized for each exam paper, so every candidate’s test will present questions in a different order. Additionally, while the difficulty of the questions varies, they will not be arranged in any specific order of difficulty.

Candidates’ scores are calculated as follows:

1.5 points for each correct answer

-0.4 points for each incorrect answer

0 points for questions left unanswered

The maximum possible score is 90 points, and candidates will receive both an overall score and individual section scores. The test must be completed within 100 minutes.

Conclusion

Italy, the birthplace of modern medicine, offers globally respected medical education, blending rich history with advanced healthcare. Top universities like the University of Bologna and Sapienza University of Rome provide rigorous, affordable MBBS programs that emphasize hands-on experience and research. The IMAT exam is key to admission, ensuring students are well-prepared for academic challenges. With globally recognized degrees, vibrant culture, and diverse career opportunities, Italy is an attractive destination for aspiring doctors seeking a comprehensive education in a dynamic and historic setting.
